Faculty Senate

The Faculty Senate is a representative body of faculty from all university schools and colleges coming together for discussion, debate, and advisory work that benefits Temple University. Historically, the group has served as a collective voice for faculty.

The Senate and its committees have the responsibility of acting as advisors to the administration and the Board of Trustees, offering support and recommendations in curricula, academic affairs, operations, finance, policy, among other areas.

Who is eligible to be on Faculty Senate:

  • Full-time faculty on a tenure/tenure-track appointment
  • Full-time faculty on a non-tenure track appointment

  • Full-time professional librarians

  • The University President and Provost are Ex-officio members of the Senate

Meetings Schedule

University Faculty Senate Meetings are open to all faculty and are held twice yearly—usually the last meeting held at the end of the semester. Senate meeting days are varied so that all faculty members have a chance to attend meetings in any year.

Annually, each college selects faculty to serve as Representative Senators of the Faculty Senate for their college. The number of Representative Senators in each college is based on the number of eligible Senate members. Schools are notified each year of this number.

Representative Senate Meetings are held monthly from September to November and from January to March. These meetings are open to all, but voting privileges are extended only to the Representative Senators.

Collegial Assemblies

Collegial Assemblies are a crucial vehicle for meaningful faculty participation in the governance of their schools and colleges. Faculty members are encouraged to contact department chairs, their deans’ offices, or the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs to learn more about the mission, functions, activities and bylaws of their collegial assemblies.
