Promotion and Reviews

The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs (OVPFA) provides guidance, advice and support to faculty, department chairs, schools and colleges related to promotion and tenure guidelines and procedures. The Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) offers workshops and consultations throughout the year to guide faculty in building strong teaching portfolios.

Please note: In addition to the guidelines provided below, each school/college may have their own supplementary tenure and promotion guidelines and procedures.

Adjunct Faculty

Each school and college develops and posts guidelines for the formal evaluation of adjunct faculty. These guidelines include a process for adjunct faculty to request an evaluation to be considered for promotion, pay increase or to request a multi-semester appointment.  Decisions regarding promotion in rank are in the sole discretion of the school/college.

Merit Awards

Merit Awards are given for exceptional faculty contributions in teaching, research, scholarship, and creative activity. Outstanding performance in service to the university, to the profession and to the communities we serve may also be recognized. Nominations for merit awards may be made by faculty members themselves, or by colleagues, chairs, deans, or Temple senior leadership. Eligible faculty must submit an annual activity report by a prescribed deadline and may need to meet other school requirements (if applicable) to be eligible for consideration.

University and school guidelines, as well as faculty collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) govern the process of nomination and the criteria for recommending. Merit Awards are made by the Provost, who consults with faculty chairs, school-wide committees, and deans, among others.
